Time for a Sunday Final

That’s right, I’m going to leave in a few minutes depraved of sleep and go take a final on a Sunday morning for my business ethics class. Why am I sitting here typing this if I know that this is the case? I guess that’s just the way I roll. All I have to say is, after today I can turn into a normal human again.

Rolled out my package to 300 call center clients yesterday at 1:00 AM, no problems. Rockit.

Drinking from the Fire Hose (and getting beat by one)

So this weekended I embarked upon a wonderful mission of drinking from a fire hose. Not literally; BUS-329-XIM Business Ethics. The portion that comes after the class number (329) determines the section, so I’m pretty sure that this one means “Extremely Immersed Methodology”, as the 3 credit course is only 5 days long. This means from 9:00 AM-5:00 PM every day of class I am a slave. What’s even worse is that I need to take a day off of work for this Wednesday’s class; and I really can’t afford to do that. It’s not a terrible class, it’s just the burden of a lifetime. We covered 6 chapters in 2 days and the midterm is on Wednesday. Captain Insano.

Heineken is a new favorite, never had it until recently. Also a single Red Bull kept me attentive the entire class, it might become a new favorite. Unfortunately I admit the rip off of $2 a can, but I can’t help it. I’m sure it’s rotting my insides as well, but I ate a salad for lunch. I’ll be fine.

Forget drinking from the fire hose, I feel like these dudes: getting beat down straight up owned by the fire hose. Extra credit for whoever can name the movie without looking it up.

It makes it funnier if you imagine the guy in the video is my professor and the assailants are my classmates.

What have I been doing?

I haven’t blogged in quite some time, it’s been almost a month! Since graduation most of my time as been spent tutoring. I am working with three children who have autism, and I just love them so much. Each of them has so much potential and their futures are so bright.

Autism can be defined by the following:

:: Autism is a bio-neurological developmental disability that generally appears before the age of 3.

:: Autism impacts the normal development of the brain in the areas of social interaction, communication skills, and cognitive function. Individuals with autism typically have difficulties in verbal and non-verbal communication, social interactions, and leisure or play activities.

:: Individuals with autism often suffer from numerous physical ailments which may include: allergies, asthma, epilepsy, digestive disorders, persistent viral infections, feeding disorders, sensory integration dysfunction, sleeping disorders, and more.

:: Autism is diagnosed four times more often in boys than girls. Its prevalence is not affected by race, region, or socio-economic status. Since autism was first diagnosed in the U.S. the occurrence has climbed to an alarming one in 150 people across the country.

:: Autism does not affect life expectancy. Currently there is no cure for autism, though with early intervention and treatment, the diverse symptoms related to autism can be greatly improved.

It is a spectrum disorder, and no two kids with autism deal with the exact same challenges. There is a lot of research going on in the field right now and slowly the mystery is being unraveled.

This video gives a little glimpse of autism and how important tutoring is:

The first little girl I began working with is Lauren. She is so sweet. Over the past months (since October 2006) she has made incredible strides in her language. Before she would repeat a lot, and now she is asking questions and making more and more complete sentences. My favorite is when she gets my purse and asks me “Sarabeth, what did you bring today?” I just love her so much. We have fun playing with her toys and incorporating her programs into play, making it fun to learn. One of her favorite things is her USA puzzle, I kid you not she knows all the states and where they go, and she is three and a half! My other two kids are great as well. Tutoring can be challenging, but it is more than worth it.
